The project of rehabilitating and adapting the building as a student center was considered to provide services and space for a set of activities carried out by the students of the UPCT, creating a generic design program with rooms, offices, meeting rooms, an auditorium and a large multi-purpose space with double-height ceilings. The total gross surface area is 1,146 m2.
The intervention goes beyond the limits of the original construction – a modest residential building from the early 20th century protected by urban zoning regulations – to invade the adjacent public space (an inner courtyard) and occupy the area underneath it, in an effort to expand the available surface area.
The material conditions of implementation establish a strong commitment with modern construction and infrastructure principles, with attention to new technologies and using pre-fabricated assembly systems.
The construction itself is capable of expressing, both on the outside and in its interior, its conception, structure and technical solutions, to become an emblematic building for the Polytechnic University, thus directly relating it to the UPCT’s educational and academic contents.
